ABC.es Lord of the Rings' is put at the service of British intelligence in World War II. They reveal a series of documents of the period that has just been declassified.
Tolkien, a renowned professor of English literature at Oxford, was trained along with other intellectuals of the time at Bletchley Park, code-breaking center located in Buckinghamshire. This group may read the hitherto impenetrable Enigma messages, the machine with which the Nazis have threatened to Allied intelligence services. A fact that helped save Britain from the German conquest.
Apparently the author spent three days Through training en el desciframiento de códigos en marzo de 1939, seis meses antes de que se produjese el estallido de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y dieciocho meses después de la publicación de «El Hobbit», el libro que acabaría dando lugar a la trilogía de «El señor de los anillos». Pero finalmente declinó trabajar a tiempo completo en esta empresa por motivos que se desconocen.
«J.R.R. Tolkien es conocido en el mundo entero por sus novelas, pero su participación en el esfuerzo bélico sorprendería a mucha gente», comenta un historiador británico en unas declaraciones recogidas por el «Daily Telegraph».
